Calcium Nitrate Helps Ensure Adequate Potassium Levels for Top Quality Watermelons
Potassium is critical in watermelons for ensuring top quality fruit by determining the level of sugars at harvest and, also, plays a key role in the transport of sugars to fruit.
Potassium - Sugar and TSS
The potassium requirement for watermelon crops remains high until the beginning of fruit ripening. Watermelons have a relatively high potassium requirement compared to nitrogen with over 151 lb/ac being utilized by high-yielding 22 t/ac crops.
Potassium and Yield
Potassium maintains the ionic balance and water status within the plant. It is involved in the production and transport of sugars in the plant; enzyme activation; and synthesis of proteins. It is important to maintain a good balance of potassium with magnesium and calcium. Too much potassium restricts the uptake of these other cations.
Another important reminder when it comes to your nitrogen fertilizer source is that ammonium nitrogen can be antagonistic to the uptake of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. However, nitrate nitrogen promotes the uptake of those nutrients.
The use of YaraLiva® Calcium Nitrate paired with potassium nitrate will ensure adequate potassium and positively influence the sugar development of your fruit. |
