Alongside nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium is one of the most important nutrients in citrus production for crop yield and improving quality. Potassium plays a major role in the movement of water, nutrients, and carbohydrates.

University and industry research has shown that potassium has a major impact on leaf size, vigor, and overall tree health. Potassium nutrition positively influences yield, fruit size, and quality. Potassium is especially important for citrus once the fruit begins to size and throughout maturity. Trials and field experience have also shown that potassium plays a role in rind thickness, fruit color, and the juice content of citrus.

Photosynthesis is impaired when plants are potassium-deficient due to a reduced osmo-regulation. Potassium is relatively immobile in most clay-type soils. Sandy soils are generally low in potassium. It is always good practice to apply potassium fertilizers based on soil and tissue analysis. Typical application practices are dry soil potassium applied annually or applied as fertigation throughout the growing season when the trees require it.
